Wike pushes For Japan partnership

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has moved to deepen ties with the Japanese government to speed up the development of Abuja.

This followed a meeting in the nation’s capital with Suzuki Hideo and officials of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The effort is aimed at driving growth in line with the Abuja master plan.

The engagement comes as Abuja continues to expand, with authorities seeking stronger partnerships to improve infrastructure and services.

Japan has played a role in supporting the city’s planning process and development projects over the years. The renewed push is part of wider plans to boost progress in key sectors across the capital.

Wike noted that Japan’s support has covered areas such as education, health, and urban planning, including work on the Abuja master plan.

He said the administration is ready to sustain cooperation, especially in agriculture and city development, to improve living conditions and meet long-term goals.

The minister also pointed to teacher training programmes as part of the partnership’s impact.

On his part, Hideo said Abuja remains vital to Nigeria’s growth and confirmed ongoing projects in infrastructure, healthcare, and industry.

He added that efforts are underway to improve waste management and upgrade the city plan for future needs.

JICA also indicated readiness to support large-scale projects once the updated plan is completed.
