The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday met with political party leaders in Abuja to present fresh guidelines for the 2027 general elections, bringing together key stakeholders from across the country to discuss the new framework.

The meeting was led by INEC chairman Joash Amupitan and had in attendance party officials including representatives of major political groups, all gathered to review the rules that will guide the next national vote.

The new guidelines were developed in line with the Electoral Act 2026, with the commission making it clear that political parties must adjust to the updated system as preparations for the elections gather pace.

Part of the plan includes the start of Continuous Voter Registration, with online pre-registration set for August 18, 2025, followed by physical registration on August 25, giving eligible Nigerians the chance to register or update their records.

INEC also plans a nationwide clean-up of the voter register to remove duplicate entries and names of deceased persons, while discussions continue around the use of technology, especially the electronic transmission of results to improve trust in the process.
