Obi Cubana Clarifies Remarks On Igbos

Nigerian businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, widely known as Obi Cubana, has responded to backlash over his recent comments about the Igbo, insisting they were misunderstood and taken out of context.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Igbo, the Cubana Group chairman said a longer speech he delivered at an event in Enugu was reduced to a short clip and circulated with what he described as malicious intent.

He explained that his comments were meant to encourage development in the South-East through civic participation and engagement with the federal government, not to insult the Igbo people.

“I did not intend to insult Ndigbo. I spoke out of concern and a desire for progress,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to unity and development in the region.

Obi Cubana also stressed the importance of political freedom, noting that citizens should be able to support candidates of their choice without intimidation.

He warned against divisive narratives and mob reactions that could create tension within the community.

Referencing activities of the City Boy Movement, including a recent event in Owerri, he maintained that political engagement can remain peaceful despite differences in opinion.
