Development in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State has stalled under Governor Siminalayi Fubara, according to former ambassador to South Korea and Renewed Hope coordinator in the state, Desmond Akawor.

Akawor made the claim on Monday during a thank you visit to the area by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, where political leaders and residents gathered to assess the state of affairs in the council.
He said Oyigbo residents voted for Fubara with the hope that projects and progress started under Wike would continue, but that expectation has not been met since Wike left office in 2023.

According to him, the local government has seen little change, with the only visible gain being a single commissioner appointment, which he described as inadequate for an area of its size and contribution.
Akawor also raised concerns over reports of about N600 billion in the state treasury, warning that Oyigbo must not be excluded when funds are shared and insisting that allocations should be fair across all groups.

He further praised Wike’s past role in restoring calm to the area during periods of unrest linked to IPOB activities, noting that the intervention allowed residents to return to normal life.
The former ambassador said Oyigbo people remain thankful for past support but are united in demanding inclusion, balance, and renewed attention to development as political activities ahead of 2027 gather pace.
