Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme have protested at the Lagos House in Ikeja over the non-payment of pension increases, wage awards and other outstanding entitlements.

The retirees gathered at the Lagos State Government premises on Monday to demand the implementation of approved pension enhancements and payment of arrears they said had remained unpaid.

The protesters also called on the state government to settle other benefits owed to them, saying the outstanding payments had affected their welfare and made life increasingly difficult for many retirees.
The demonstration was, however, disrupted after police officers reportedly fired tear gas at the pensioners gathered at the Lagos House.
The action forced some of the protesters to disperse from the area and created tension as the retirees expressed anger over the use of force during their demonstration.
The pensioners insisted that they had gathered peacefully to demand what they described as their legitimate entitlements from the state government.
