The Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday criticised the defection of 16 Rivers State lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress, calling their move a return to a party they were already serving in practice.

The lawmakers had announced their switch to the APC on Friday, marking their second defection since taking office.

The PDP said the lawmakers acted under the control of powerful interests, arguing that their behaviour since entering the Assembly showed they were already disconnected from the party that brought them into office. The party described their departure as a blow to legislative integrity.

Party officials said the move amounted to lawmakers abandoning the platform that gave them their mandates while pretending to still represent the PDP. The party said history would remember them as elected officials who worked against democratic values.
The PDP also revealed plans to go to court to reclaim the seats, citing constitutional provisions that prevent elected officials from abandoning the party that sponsored their election without a valid reason. The party said legal action would be taken to ensure the mandates are not transferred to another platform.
The statement urged PDP members in Rivers State to stay committed as the party works to rebuild. It said fresh efforts were underway to strengthen internal unity and restore trust through fairness and wider inclusion.
