Wike Launches Major Security Push In Abuja

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has ordered a full-scale reinforcement of security across Abuja, directing tighter surveillance at all entry points linking the capital to neighbouring states.

Following his directive, the newly activated Operation Sweep Squad — a joint force made up of the military, police, DSS and other security agencies — has been deployed to strategic locations across the FCT.

While briefing the team on Tuesday, FCT Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye said the operation was designed to ensure seamless coordination among security formations and to confront rising crime in the territory. He said the minister not only initiated the exercise but also provided the logistics needed to make it effective.

Dantawaye noted that Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police had given full approval for the operation, which comes at a period when security risks usually increase ahead of the festive season. He said the task force had been directed to prioritise areas vulnerable to kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes, assuring residents that a stronger and more visible security presence would be noticeable across Abuja.

According to him, the minister has already approved funding for fuel, vehicle maintenance and allowances for personnel to ensure the operation is sustained.

Dantawaye also spoke on the growing number of beggars across the city centre. He said security agencies were working with relevant FCTA departments to address the issue, explaining that many suspects hide under the guise of begging to commit crimes. He said those arrested at identified black spots would be profiled and removed from the streets once legal processes are finalised.

The police chief said the exercise will be carried out in partnership with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board after all legal procedures are completed.
