Wike Urges Southsouth Commission To Focus On Real Development

Nyesom Wike has met with members of the South-South Development Commission in Abuja, calling on them to commit fully to development in the region and remain loyal to President Bola Tinubu’s agenda.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory hosted the board and management team during their courtesy visit on November 19, 2025.

He told the delegation that their appointments were an expression of trust from the president and insisted that the only way to repay that trust is through hard work and visible results. He reminded them that their mandate is rooted in the Renewed Hope Agenda and urged them to stay focused on service rather than personal interests.

Wike cautioned the commissioners against becoming tools in political battles or allowing anyone to derail the mission of the new agency. He noted that the commission was created to improve the lives of people in the South-South and warned that corruption, rivalry, and mismanagement could destroy the institution before it gains momentum.

He outlined clear expectations for project planning and execution, urging members to avoid awarding contracts without proper funding and to stay away from projects designed only to benefit a few individuals. He encouraged wide consultation with state governments to avoid duplication and ensure that the most pressing community needs are addressed.

The minister also spoke about the importance of courage and teamwork, saying regional development commissions in the past failed because leaders placed politics above service. He praised President Tinubu for creating the commission and said no previous administration had shown such readiness to empower the regions.

Board chairman Chibudom Nwuche earlier thanked Wike for his support in setting up the commission and described him as an example of effective leadership. He said the board intends to mirror his approach to fast and quality project delivery. Managing Director Usoro Akpabio also pledged that the commission will carry out its responsibilities with full dedication to the development of the South-South.
