The court had earlier delivered a lengthy judgment in which Justice James Omotosho convicted Kanu on all seven terrorism charges filed by the Department of State Services on behalf of the federal government. The judge imposed life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five, and six, which ordinarily carry the death penalty. He issued additional terms of 20 years on count three and five years on count seven, ordering that all sentences run at the same time.

The court held that Kanu’s broadcasts, threats of violence, killings, and enforcement of sit-at-home orders in the South-East amounted to acts of terrorism under Nigerian law. The ruling followed years of litigation, adjournments, and appeals that have shaped one of the country’s most talked-about trials.

Ejimakor maintained that the fight is not over and said the defence will move to the Court of Appeal to challenge both the conviction and the sentencing.
