Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said he will accept defeat in the 2027 presidential election if the poll is free, fair and credible.

Obi made the statement during an interview on Thursday, saying he would respect the decision of Nigerians if they chose another candidate at the election.

He maintained, however, that he won the 2023 presidential election and said he would continue to hold that position. According to him, the officials who conducted the election were aware of what happened during the process, including the issues that affected the results.
On the argument that the presidency should be rotated among regions through a turn-by-turn arrangement, Obi said elections should be based on competence rather than ethnic or religious considerations.

He argued that he is qualified to become president and has acquired the education and experience needed to lead Nigeria and address the country’s challenges.
Obi also referred to his educational background, mentioning institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Columbia and Kellogg. He said his academic credentials could be verified and offered to withdraw from the presidential race if any of the certificates he presented were found to be false.
The former Anambra State governor also raised concerns about the limited representation of younger Nigerians in the country’s presidency.
He noted that since Nigeria gained independence in 1960, no person born after that year had served as president, despite repeated assurances that young Nigerians are the leaders of tomorrow.
Obi argued that the situation was unusual after more than six decades of independence and called for greater opportunities for younger people to participate in leadership and governance.
