Former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, has stated that former President Goodluck Jonathan cannot contest in the 2027 presidential election under the Nigerian Constitution.

Justice Salami explained that the constitutional provision limits any individual to a maximum of eight years in office as president, a condition Jonathan has already met.

He noted that Jonathan first completed the remaining term of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before serving a full four-year tenure of his own, making him ineligible to seek another term.

Jonathan, who lost his reelection bid in 2015, has been repeatedly linked to speculations about a possible political comeback ahead of the 2027 elections. However, legal experts, including Justice Salami, maintain that the constitutional term limit makes such a return impossible.
