Osogbo Leaders Push For 2026 Governorship Ticket

Traditional leaders and elders in Osogbo have called on major political parties to zone the 2026 Osun governorship ticket to the state capital, insisting that it is time for an indigene of Osogbo to lead the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed August 8, 2026, for the Osun governorship election, and preparations are already stirring political debates across the state.

During a live programme on Osun State Broadcasting Corporation Radio, the Baale of Gbodofon and Chairman of the Council of Baales in Osogbo, High Chief Jimoh Ibrahim, said community leaders are united in their resolve to ensure Osogbo produces the next governor. He credited the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, for fostering unity through the creation of the Osogbo Action Committee and the Osogbo Elders Council, which have bridged long-standing political divisions.

According to Ibrahim, the traditional heads in the town are now working together to strengthen Osogbo’s position within the state’s political landscape. He said all Baales have agreed to support the elders’ council in pressing for a fair share of political power, adding that the community is fully prepared to mobilise for the goal.

Prince Adeleke Oduola Ibiloye, who chairs the Osogbo Elders Council, said the town has supported candidates from other parts of Osun for years and now expects that goodwill to be repaid. He explained that Osogbo has consistently played a stabilising role in the state’s politics and deserves the chance to produce the governor in the next election cycle.

With several Osogbo indigenes already showing interest in contesting under the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, and African Democratic Congress, the town’s leaders expressed confidence that unity among their people will make 2026 the year Osogbo finally claims the governorship seat.

The growing call adds a new dimension to Osun’s pre-election landscape, as zoning debates and regional interests continue to shape political alignments ahead of the polls.
