The University of Benin has announced that about 5,000 students may be barred from sitting for their second-semester examinations scheduled to begin on September 29 due to unpaid school charges.

In a memo signed by the Registrar, Ademola Bobola, the university said the affected students ignored repeated reminders and also failed to subscribe to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. He explained that despite several opportunities to either pay or access the loan facility, no positive response had been recorded from the defaulters.

To ensure compliance, an enforcement task force led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) has been set up to monitor the process. The university stressed that the directive is part of efforts to uphold academic standards and fairness to students who met their obligations.
This move mirrors a similar step taken earlier in April by Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, which also enforced a “no school fees, no exam” policy. There, the management warned students against diverting funds provided by their parents to gambling or other activities, insisting that only those who fulfilled their financial obligations could participate in examinations.
