The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State has deepened, as the state executive committee has dismissed claims that former governorship candidate Bello Isiyaku is the party’s chairman.

The rift dates back to Isiyaku’s suspension before the 2023 elections over alleged anti-party activities and divisive conduct. Following his removal, the ADC national leadership at its 2022 convention in Zaria ratified Umar Muhammad Faruk as the state chairman.

Speaking at a press briefing in Sokoto on Sunday, the State Secretary, Yusuf Abdulkadir Alkali, said Isiyaku could not reclaim the position, stressing that the party had already resolved the matter. He added that at a recent meeting of the state executive, 18 out of 25 members reaffirmed Faruk as the authentic state chairman.

Alkali accused some party elders of trying to smuggle Isiyaku back into the structure, describing it as a breach of the party’s constitution. He insisted that the Sokoto ADC remains loyal to Faruk and would resist attempts to undermine the national leadership’s decision.
The Sokoto dispute mirrors similar internal wrangling in other states. In August, the ADC in Kebbi suspended its chairman, deputy chairman, and secretary over alleged misconduct and financial mismanagement after consultations with stakeholders.
The widening cracks suggest continued turbulence within the party as it struggles to rebuild after the 2023 elections.
