The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was abducted by armed men in Ado-Ekiti, saying he sustained an injury during an altercation with some individuals.
Reports emerged on Friday that Sowore’s whereabouts were unknown after armed men allegedly stormed a popular restaurant in the state capital and forcibly took him away.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers were political thugs allegedly linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the police described the abduction report as false, explaining that Sowore was involved in an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.
In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the police said they were alerted to the incident and quickly deployed officers to the location.
According to the command, the officers rescued Sowore from the scene, but he sustained a minor injury and was taken to the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, where he is receiving medical attention.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, has ordered a discreet investigation to establish what happened, identify everyone involved and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.
The command also urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified reports that could cause panic or heighten tension in the state.
It maintained that it remained committed to protecting lives and property across Ekiti State, regardless of political affiliation, social status or background.
