The Federal Government has suspended the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, following the deaths of suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Corps.

The suspension was ordered by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, after reports emerged of the deaths of some miners arrested during enforcement operations in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Minna, Niger State.

The suspected illegal miners were arrested during operations conducted on September 15 and 16, 2026, as part of efforts to tackle illegal mining activities in the state.
The incident was reportedly discovered in the early hours of Thursday, prompting the Federal Government to order an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The minister directed the NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to conduct a full-scale investigation into the incident and ensure that the process is transparent and not obstructed.
Following the directive, Audi ordered Aniviye to immediately step aside and report to the NSCDC national headquarters in Abuja.

The state commandant was also directed to appear before an investigative panel alongside the Heads of Operations, Mining, Legal, Intelligence and Investigation of the Niger State Command.
The Corps said a replacement commandant had been directed to proceed to Niger State and assume control of the command.
The NSCDC said the investigation would determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and establish whether any officers or personnel violated the law, official procedures or professional standards in handling the detainees.
It added that any personnel found culpable could face administrative or disciplinary action and, where applicable, criminal prosecution under the relevant laws.
The Federal Government urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding while the investigation is conducted.
The minister also expressed condolences to the Niger State Government and the families of the deceased.
The NSCDC said it remained committed to protecting the rights, safety and dignity of people in its custody while carrying out its statutory responsibilities, including the fight against illegal mining and the protection of critical national assets.
