A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Cross River State chairman of the Labour Party, Austine Ibok, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ibok announced his defection on Friday and instructed his supporters across the 196 wards in the state’s 18 local government areas to move their political structures into the APC.

He said the decision followed consultations with his family, political associates and supporters, as well as his assessment of the political situation and what he considered to be the interest of Cross River State.
The former opposition leader cited internal disagreements within the ADC, including concerns over cohesion, equity, fairness, justice and sincerity in the party’s decision-making processes.

He particularly pointed to disputes surrounding zoning and other leadership arrangements as factors behind his decision to leave the party.
Ibok also announced his intention to support the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, citing its handling of security, infrastructure development, efforts to recover the state’s oil wells and progress on the Bakassi Deep Seaport Project.
He said his decision was based on his assessment of the administration’s performance and the prevailing political circumstances in the state.
The defection is expected to strengthen the APC’s political structure in Cross River ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Ibok directing his supporters across the state to align with the ruling party.
