Marafa Promises To Resign If Insecurity Persists After Two Years

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa, has pledged to resign from office if elected governor and his administration fails to achieve at least 75 per cent of its security targets within two years.

Marafa made the commitment on Wednesday during a media engagement in Gusau, where he spoke about his plans for addressing the security challenges facing the state ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The former senator said his administration would establish clear security objectives and assess its performance within the first two years in office.

He said failure to meet at least 75 per cent of the targets would make him take personal responsibility by stepping down from the position of governor.

Marafa said his decision to seek the governorship was influenced by his desire to help restore peace and order in Zamfara, which has continued to face problems linked to banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

The NDC candidate said his years of involvement in Zamfara politics had exposed him to the security and governance problems affecting the state. He added that the experience had given him an understanding of the issues that would need to be addressed by any administration seeking to improve security.

Marafa said, if elected, he would apply his political experience and leadership capacity to the security challenges confronting communities across the state.

He, however, declined to disclose detailed aspects of his proposed security strategy, saying some of the measures involved sensitive information that could not be made public.

The former lawmaker also acknowledged that security responsibilities are shared between the state and Federal Government. He said his administration would concentrate on areas within the constitutional responsibilities of the state while working with the Federal Government on matters under its control.

Marafa said he was confident that his experience within the political system had prepared him to understand the challenges confronting Zamfara and determine the steps required to address them if he receives the mandate to govern the state.

His pledge comes as political parties and their candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 governorship election, with security expected to remain a major issue in Zamfara’s political campaign.
