The Lagos State Government has introduced three months of free transportation for police officers using the state’s integrated public transportation system.

The initiative was launched on Wednesday as part of measures to support police personnel and recognise their role in maintaining peace and security across the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Lagos, ASP Aminat Mayegun, disclosed this in a statement.
She said 2,000 Cowry Cards were presented to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the FCID Annex, Lagos, Simeon Akpanudom, who represented the Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, at the event.
According to Mayegun, the cards will give police officers unlimited free access to major transport services in Lagos for three months.
The beneficiaries will be able to use the Blue Line and Red Line rail services, electric water boats and Bus Rapid Transit without paying fares during the period.
The initiative was developed through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation Logistics and forms part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Lagos Blue Line Rail.
After the three-month complimentary period, the state government has proposed a 50 per cent reduction in transportation fares for police officers.

Akpanudom, who represented Disu, conveyed the Inspector-General’s appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the initiative and his continued support for police welfare in Lagos.
He said the gesture recognised the sacrifices made by police officers in protecting lives and property and maintaining a safe environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
The AIG also commended the state government for its various interventions through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and other programmes aimed at supporting the Nigeria Police Force.
He said affordable and dependable transportation would reduce the financial burden on officers who travel across the state while also improving their morale as they carry out their security duties.
Akpanudom further acknowledged the support of Air Peace to the police through rebates on domestic and international flights and special boarding arrangements for police personnel.
He called on other state governments, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to support police welfare, noting that better-supported security personnel would be in a stronger position to perform their responsibilities effectively.
According to him, the transport initiative would also deepen cooperation between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force in promoting public safety, security and good governance.
The programme is expected to provide immediate transport relief for police officers while strengthening the state’s broader support for security personnel.
