The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to raise campaign funds through small contributions from ordinary Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, disclosed this during an interview on Arise News’ Prime Time on Wednesday.

Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the Senate, said the initiative was aimed at reducing the influence of wealthy individuals and those with access to government resources on Nigeria’s political system.

He explained that Nigerians would be able to contribute modest amounts, including N1,000 and N2,000, to support the party’s campaign activities.

According to him, the NDC does not receive funding from the government treasury, making contributions from citizens an important part of its proposed campaign financing model.

Dickson argued that allowing political activities to depend largely on wealthy individuals could give a small group of powerful people excessive influence over the country’s democratic process.

He said the proposed fundraising model would give ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to participate directly in supporting a political movement they believe in.

The NDC leader also disclosed that the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would announce its members after the process had been concluded.

He said the party was being cautious about releasing details of the council before finalising its plans, noting that it did not want to make an announcement and later withdraw it.

Dickson further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and other relevant institutions to ensure that the 2027 elections are conducted freely, fairly and credibly.

He said the NDC was prepared to take its campaign directly to Nigerians and contest every vote during the election.
