Wike: Amaechi Unfit for Vice Presidency, Accuses NBA of Partisanship

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his ambition to become Nigeria’s Vice President, arguing that his past actions make him unsuitable for the position.

Wike made the statement on Wednesday during his monthly media engagement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he also accused the Nigerian Bar Association of becoming involved in partisan politics.

The FCT minister said Nigerians should examine the records of politicians presenting themselves as defenders of democracy and the rule of law before supporting them for sensitive political offices.

Wike referred to Amaechi’s past dispute with the judiciary in Rivers State, alleging that the former governor was involved in shutting down courts in the state. He also recalled a case involving a pregnant woman who, according to him, gave birth while in custody.

The minister argued that actions capable of weakening the judiciary should be taken seriously when assessing the suitability of political aspirants for top government positions.

Wike and Amaechi have been political rivals for years, with their disagreements dating back to their time in Rivers State politics. Their differences have continued to feature prominently in political discussions involving the state and national politics.

The FCT minister also turned his attention to the Nigerian Bar Association, accusing the professional body of abandoning its traditional position of political neutrality.

According to Wike, the NBA should concentrate on protecting the rule of law, justice and constitutional principles rather than becoming involved in political battles or appearing to support particular political interests.

His comments come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several politicians already positioning themselves for key elective offices.

Wike’s latest remarks further expose the deep political rivalry between him and Amaechi, while also raising questions about the role of professional associations in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political environment.
