The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has suffered another setback ahead of the 2027 general elections following the defection of hundreds of its members to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defectors were received on Saturday in Takai Local Government Area by the NDC senatorial candidate for Kano South, Dr Kassim Ibrahim Bataiya.
The development comes amid increased political activity in Kano, where rival political camps are working to strengthen their structures ahead of the 2027 elections.
Several APC members have reportedly moved to the NDC in different parts of the state since former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso emerged as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.
At the same time, political movements have also been recorded in the opposite direction, with some politicians previously aligned with Kwankwaso reportedly joining the APC as the election approaches.
The growing movement of politicians between the two camps has added to the political contest in Kano, one of Nigeria’s key electoral states.
The 2027 election is expected to produce a fierce battle in the state, particularly as Kwankwaso and his former political ally, Governor Kabir Yusuf, now find themselves on opposing political sides.
Political observers have predicted a closely contested election as the major parties intensify efforts to attract supporters and build strong grassroots structures across Kano’s local government areas.
