A 101-year-old woman, Esther Ogunmabo, has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly selling cannabis in Ilisan, Ogun State.
Ogunmabo was arrested on Saturday, August 15, 2026, after NDLEA officials found 90 grammes of skunk, a form of cannabis, in her possession. The substance was reportedly divided into small portions for distribution to customers.
The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the elderly woman admitted during questioning that she had been selling cannabis to residents of the community.
According to the NDLEA, Ogunmabo told investigators that she turned to the illegal trade after a fire destroyed the provisions shop she previously operated.
She reportedly explained that one of her daughters, who lives in Lagos, supplied her with the cannabis used for the business.
The daughter was allegedly supplying the substance to her mother at regular intervals, after which Ogunmabo sold it in smaller quantities to people within the community.
Following her arrest, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), directed that the 101-year-old suspect should be released on bail and referred for counselling in view of her advanced age.
The agency also confirmed the arrest of the daughter allegedly connected to the supply of the cannabis.
The arrest formed part of a wider series of operations carried out by NDLEA officers against the trafficking and distribution of illicit drugs in different parts of the country.
The agency said its recent operations also led to drug interceptions and arrests at various locations, including land and maritime entry points.
NDLEA has continued its operations against the cultivation, movement and sale of prohibited substances as part of efforts to reduce the availability of illicit drugs in Nigerian communities.
