The party’s state chairman, Michael Okunlade, said the SDP was ready to compete for power in the state, pointing to its presence across all 33 local government areas as evidence of its grassroots reach.

Okunlade said the party remained known among voters and had the structure needed to mount a strong campaign despite the emergence of newer political parties and platforms.

Speaking to party stakeholders, Agboola described his decision to seek the governorship as a response to what he sees as a responsibility to contribute to the development of the state and country.

He said the concerns regularly expressed by Nigerians about governance should encourage qualified citizens to participate actively in politics rather than remain onlookers.

Agboola criticised what he called basic or limited governance, saying governments should move beyond the provision of physical infrastructure and concentrate on developing strong institutions that can continue to serve people in the future.

He said his proposed administration would adopt a systems-based approach to governance, with emphasis on creating institutions capable of delivering lasting results.

Education, according to him, would be one of the major areas of focus, especially as artificial intelligence and other technologies continue to transform industries and the global economy.

The SDP candidate said Nigeria’s education system needed to be reviewed to ensure young people acquire skills that match the demands of a changing labour market.

He also called for changes to school curricula to encourage creativity, adaptability and innovative thinking among young Nigerians.

Agboola linked the SDP to Nigeria’s progressive political tradition and the struggle associated with the June 12, 1993 election. He also referred to the political history of the Abiola family and the association of prominent political figures with the progressive movement.

He said recent elections had shown that voters were becoming more willing to resist political pressure and intimidation when choosing their leaders.

The candidate urged Oyo voters to reject patronage and what he described as the practice of providing short-term benefits to secure electoral support.

He also cited recent victories involving the SDP at the appellate court as an indication that the party remained relevant and had developed stronger organisational structures.

Agboola said the party had functioning structures across the state, including local government leaders, women leaders and youth organisers, which he said were prepared for the 2027 election.

He said his ambition was to lead Oyo State towards stronger institutions, long-term development and greater use of innovation in governance.
