Nigerian Senate Seeks Ban On MTN, DSTV

Tension rose in Abuja on Tuesday as Adams Oshiomhole urged the Federal Government to revoke the licences of South African firms like MTN Group and MultiChoice.

He made the call during plenary while reacting to fresh attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Lawmakers also condemned the violence and asked for quick diplomatic steps to protect citizens abroad.

The demand followed renewed reports of xenophobic attacks, which lawmakers said have left Nigerians unsafe.

Osita Izunaso raised a motion on the issue, warning that the situation was becoming urgent. Victor Umeh described the attacks as alarming and called for action from the African Union.

Oshiomhole argued that Nigeria should respond with firm economic steps, saying companies benefiting from Nigeria should not operate freely while Nigerians face hostility abroad.

He pushed for stronger measures beyond statements, insisting that the country must act to defend its citizens.

He also linked the crisis to political rhetoric in South Africa, which he said fuels public anger against foreigners.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the attacks as unacceptable and said lawmakers would engage South African authorities.

As pressure grows, the debate signals a shift toward tougher responses, with calls for both diplomatic action and economic measures to protect Nigerians.
