Ogun Will See First Female Governor – Iyabo Obasanjo

Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared her intention to run for governor of Ogun State in 2027.

She made the announcement during a media session at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, where she said the state is ready to produce its first female governor.

She explained that Ogun’s history of strong women leaders makes such a milestone possible.

According to her, female leadership is not new to the state’s culture, and she believes Ogun can lead the country in electing a woman as governor.

Obasanjo presented a development plan centred on industrial growth, agriculture, education, technology, tourism and transport.

She praised the current rise in factory investments but said more must be done to turn industrial expansion into lasting jobs and wealth.

She also called for adding value to farm produce instead of selling raw crops.

On education and technology, she proposed a specialised secondary school for science and innovation, alongside tech hubs to prepare young people for digital careers.

She linked her entire agenda to job creation and higher disposable income, stressing that economic growth must translate into money in people’s pockets.

She further pointed to tourism potential in attractions such as Olumo Rock and the OOPL Museum, urging better infrastructure and hospitality services.

On transport, she called for safer roads as industrial activity increases truck movement.

Addressing her time away from politics, she said her experience outside government strengthens her readiness to serve and insisted she remains closely connected to grassroots communities.
