Interior Minister Moves Against Extra Charges On Passport

The warning came on Tuesday in Abuja, where the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, paid an unscheduled visit to the Nigerian Immigration Service passport office in Gwagwalada to assess operations and service delivery.

The visit followed growing complaints from citizens about extra charges and slow processing. During his tour of the VIP and Children section, the minister observed that applicants were still waiting long after official opening hours, even in areas meant for fast-track services.

He made it clear that officials must stop demanding any payment outside government-approved passport fees. According to him, Nigerians already pay fully for passport services and should not be burdened with excuses linked to logistics or office supplies.
The minister also stressed that delays and poor conduct would no longer be overlooked. He reminded officers that efficiency and professionalism were part of their duty and that applicants deserved timely attention once offices opened.
Tunji-Ojo’s visit was aimed at sending a strong message across immigration offices nationwide, as the government seeks to improve public service delivery and restore trust in the passport issuance process.
