Taraba Ghost Workers Protest Unpaid Salaries

Hundreds of civil service workers in Taraba State staged a protest on Monday over unpaid salaries spanning seven months.

The workers, identified as alleged “ghost workers,” claim they completed all required verification procedures but remain excluded from payment.

The group says more than 4,000 employees have been denied their rightful salaries due to the government’s classification of them as ghost workers.

During the protest, leaders of the workers explained that while 500 of the affected staff were called for biometric verification and have since started receiving pay, the remaining 4,000 have yet to be considered.

They insist they followed all government directives and have repeatedly appealed for intervention, including reaching out to community and religious leaders.

The workers accused the state government of ignoring promises made over the past seven months.
Officials from the state government, however, said the matter is still under review.

The Chief of Staff to Governor Agbu Kefas stated that data collection and financial assessments are ongoing to resolve the issue.

The government called for patience, stressing that it is working to complete the verification and payment process.
Despite assurances, the affected workers vowed to maintain their protest at the government house gate until their salaries are released.

The situation has raised concerns about the treatment of civil servants and the challenges surrounding payroll management in the state.
