Court Throws Out Senator Anyanwu Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has thrown out a fresh case filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu over the office of National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The decision came on Tuesday after Anyanwu asked the court to discontinue the matter, bringing another chapter of the party’s internal crisis to a close.

The case centred on the long-running dispute over who should occupy the position of PDP National Secretary.

Anyanwu had earlier left the role to contest the 2023 Imo State governorship election, which he lost, and his attempt to return to the office later triggered divisions within the party, with Sunday Udeh-Okoye emerging as a rival claimant.

The legal battle had moved through several courts. In December 2024, the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld judgments removing Anyanwu and recognising Udeh-Okoye.

However, the Supreme Court overturned those decisions in March 2025, yet the leadership tussle continued, prompting Anyanwu to file a new suit in Abuja seeking to enforce his position.

When the matter came up for hearing, Anyanwu’s lawyer told the court that developments had overtaken the case and it was no longer necessary to proceed.

Lawyers representing other parties argued that the suit should never have been filed and asked the court to dismiss it with heavy costs running into millions of naira.

In his ruling, the judge dismissed the case and refused all requests for costs, saying the delay and circumstances were not caused by any of the parties.

The decision effectively ends the fresh legal action, even as the PDP continues efforts to stabilise its national leadership.
