Why We Cancelled Omije Ojumi Burial
Plans for the burial of popular gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, known to fans as Omije Ojumi, have been suspended after disagreements emerged within her family. The decision affects all previously announced ceremonies meant to honour her life and music.
The suspension was made public on Saturday by fellow gospel singer Lanre Alewilese, who said the move followed internal family issues that could not be resolved at the moment.
The burial activities were expected to hold in Lagos, with a service of songs, candlelight procession, and tribute night scheduled for January 20 at the LTV 8 Ground in Ikeja.
Alewilese later clarified in a video message that the cancellation was not driven by personal interest. He said he was only asked to inform the public and assured fans that updates would be shared once the family reaches a final decision.
Omije Ojumi died on January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos. She was widely loved for her inspiring gospel songs and had earlier left a banking career to focus fully on music. Her family is expected to announce new burial arrangements at a later date.
