Eno Issues Warning To Journalists

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has urged journalists to uphold ethical standards in their reporting, cautioning against the misuse of press freedom through misinformation, defamation, or unverified stories that could threaten democracy and social stability.

The governor delivered the message on Sunday at the New Year Thanksgiving Service of the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held at Qua Iboe Church in Abak Itenghe, Abak Local Government Area.

He described the media as a vital partner in governance but stressed that professionalism must guide journalistic practice at all times.

Governor Eno encouraged reporters to remain committed to accuracy and truthfulness while warning that press freedom does not grant the right to engage in slander or character assassination, particularly on digital platforms.

He also advised journalists to be aware of cybercrime laws to maintain public trust in the media.
During the service, the governor highlighted ongoing development projects in Abak Local Government, including over 20 initiatives such as 23 kilometres of road construction, a model primary school, a model health centre, water projects, and affordable housing.

Prominent attendees included the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, lawmakers, labour leaders, and other members of the NUJ.
