About 200 nurses at Benue State University Teaching Hospital are at the centre of a growing dispute after the Elegant Nurses Forum accused hospital management of punishing them for joining a lawful strike in 2024.

Instead, the group alleged that hospital authorities withheld confirmations, blocked access to required exams, deducted salaries, delayed wages, and issued threats of permanent non-confirmation, all linked to the nurses’ decision to follow a strike directive by the state chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.
The nurses’ group argued that joining a recognised union action is protected by law and that probation status does not remove basic labour rights or freedom of association. It also rejected claims that the sanctions were lawful, describing them as misuse of administrative power.
