The Benue State Government has ordered Jewel Model School in Makurdi to refund ₦106,000 collected from parents for WAEC and NECO registration, saying the charge is unfair and unacceptable.

The directive came after angry parents reported the school to the Education Quality Assurance and Examinations Board over what they described as forced and inflated exam fees.

Officials summoned the school owner, principal, and PTA leaders to a meeting in Makurdi, where the school failed to give a clear reason for collecting such an amount.

The board explained that the approved fee for WAEC is ₦28,000, while NECO has not yet fixed its charges for the 2026 exams, adding that schools can only add a small handling fee of up to ₦5,000 per exam.
The government also warned that students are not required to register for both WAEC and NECO, stressing that the choice must be left to parents and students, not imposed by schools.
The school has now been placed under strict monitoring, with the government warning that any institution found exploiting parents risks serious penalties, including loss of its operating license.
