President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin after a failed attempt by rogue soldiers to topple President Patrice Talon.

The request followed an incident in Cotonou where mutinous troops briefly took over a TV station before loyal forces regained control.

The president’s message was delivered through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary. Tinubu explained that Benin’s government asked Nigeria for urgent air support to help stabilise the situation and prevent further unrest.

He said the attempted power grab has shaken democratic structures in Benin and requires swift assistance from neighbouring countries. He also noted the long-standing ties between both nations and the shared security commitments under ECOWAS.
Tinubu told lawmakers that the deployment would be carried out in consultation with Nigeria’s National Defence Council. He urged the Senate to approve the request quickly so that security forces can respond to Benin’s appeal without delay.
The Senate is expected to review the request as concerns grow about instability spreading across the region.
