The Senate will on Wednesday begin the screening of General Christopher Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, for his appointment as Minister of Defence.

The move comes as the country continues to face serious security threats, pushing the government to strengthen its leadership in the defence sector.

The nomination was sent to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu after the former defence minister, Mohammed Badaru, resigned over health concerns. The President’s letter was delivered to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, clearing the way for the screening process to begin.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele confirmed that the request is already before the lawmakers and would be read during Wednesday’s plenary. He said the chamber will go straight into the screening in line with constitutional requirements.
He explained that the Senate will not delay the process because of the urgent security situation in the country. According to him, the government must keep its momentum in the fight against bandits, extremists, and other groups threatening national stability.
Bamidele noted that with the President’s declaration of a state of emergency on national security, both the executive and the legislature must show unity. He said the swift screening of the nominee is part of that cooperation.
He added that the appointment is expected to help further strengthen efforts to restore peace and secure communities across the country.
