Otti Steps Up Push For Kanu’s Freedom

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has visited Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, renewing his efforts to secure the IPOB leader’s release.

The visit, confirmed by his media adviser Ferdinand Ekeoma, took place as Otti continued engagements he said began more than two years ago.

Otti travelled with the Abia State Attorney General Ikechukwu Uwanna, Kanu’s younger brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu and senior Sokoto officials. He told Kanu that the process toward resolving his case had intensified despite recent setbacks. He urged him to stay calm and assured him that the matter was moving through administrative channels.

The governor said he was encouraged that the Sultan of Sokoto supports the push for Kanu’s release and broader steps to ease tensions in the South East. According to the Abia government, Kanu appeared in good spirits and thanked Otti for the visit. He said his main concern remained good governance and the well-being of the people.

Footage from the visit showed tight security around the prison. Kanu was moved to the facility shortly after his conviction on November 21, 2025, when a Federal High Court found him guilty on seven terrorism-related charges and sentenced him to life imprisonment. His transfer from DSS custody to Sokoto drew widespread attention and debate.

The judgment, delivered by Justice James Omotosho, marked a turning point in the long-running case. It came two years after an Enugu High Court ruling that voided the proscription of IPOB and awarded damages against the Federal Government and the South East Governors Forum.

The latest visit signals Otti’s continued push for a political and administrative solution to Kanu’s situation as calls for his release continue across the region.
