ASUU chapter chairman, Dr. Peter Ubi, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday that the government has refused to act on any major demand even after the union suspended its strike and issued a one-month ultimatum.

He explained that ASUU initially asked for African Average Salaries for professors but later shifted to West African Average Salaries after the government objected. According to him, the Federal Government later introduced the Briggs committee’s offer, which ASUU accepted as a compromise.

Ubi said the union is shocked that the same government has refused to sign the Briggs draft agreement submitted in 2021. He added that ASUU rejected the proposed 35 percent salary increase because it did not align with the committee’s recommendations.

He accused the government of deploying delay tactics and said the union’s stance remains unchanged: ASUU stands by the Briggs committee agreement.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, recently stated that the 2009 agreement remains the last officially signed pact with the union, while the 2021 Briggs draft only serves as a framework for further talks.
