Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Idris Wase has raised alarm over the presence of suspected Boko Haram members and other criminals on recruitment lists for the Nigerian Army and police.

He spoke on Wednesday during a special plenary session held to discuss the country’s worsening security challenges.

Wase explained that the discovery was made during past recruitment exercises, where shortlisted names included individuals known to security agencies for terrorist or criminal activity. He said lawmakers familiar with defence oversight had been aware of these cases, which raised fresh concerns about how deeply criminal networks may have penetrated national security structures.

He stated that some of the shortlisted recruits were linked to Boko Haram, while others had records connected to armed robbery and similar offences. His remarks added to growing public worry over why violent groups continue to gain ground despite years of security funding and operations.
Wase cautioned against using influence or personal connections to push unqualified or questionable candidates into the armed forces or police. He stressed that only credible, trustworthy individuals should be recommended to protect the country.
He added that the integrity of recruitment is crucial to tackling insecurity, saying that careless endorsements risk weakening the very institutions meant to defend Nigerians.
