Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has asked the Senate to open a full investigation into the death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, who died in 2018 after years of alleged sexual abuse.

She presented a petition during Wednesday’s plenary on behalf of Inibehe Effiong Chambers, raising concerns that those linked to the abuse may be receiving protection.

The petition recounts that Ochanya, a student of Federal Government Girls College, Gboko, lived with the Ogbuja family from the age of five. She was allegedly abused repeatedly by Victor Ogbuja and his father, Andrew, leading to severe medical complications that eventually claimed her life.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the petition to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The panel, led by Senator Neda Imasuen, will review the circumstances of Ochanya’s abuse and death and examine the delays in securing justice.
The committee is also expected to look into why the long-pending appeal has not been filed and may push the state government to take action.
