The Christian Association of Nigeria has asked the Federal Government to take urgent and firm steps to protect citizens as attacks continue in many parts of the country.

The appeal came from CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh on Wednesday at the opening of the 32nd Triennial General Assembly of the Christian Council of Nigeria in Abuja.

Okoh told church leaders and delegates that insecurity has reached a point that demands collective Christian advocacy and decisive national action. He said the situation poses a serious threat to the nation’s wellbeing and places a clear duty on the government to protect lives and property without delay or excuses.

He urged the Council to continue working with CAN in pushing for stronger responses to violence. He also said the government must strengthen security systems, bring offenders to justice, support displaced families, rebuild destroyed communities and tackle the root causes of unrest.
Okoh encouraged churches to defend the vulnerable and show Christian values in both words and actions. He explained that the Church’s true witness is measured by its commitment to justice, compassion and righteousness rather than ceremonies alone.
The CAN President praised the Christian Council of Nigeria for its long history of promoting unity and peace, noting its importance as the oldest ecumenical body in the country. He reaffirmed CAN’s partnership with the Council and said both groups remain committed to national healing.
He officially opened the Assembly and the Council’s 96th anniversary, expressing hope that the gathering would inspire renewed efforts to build a nation where justice is upheld and citizens live without fear.
