Oluyede emerged winner after a keenly contested primary that ended early Sunday, polling 279 votes to defeat Funso Ayeni, who scored 239 votes, and Funmilayo Ogun, who had 17 votes. The primary was conducted under the supervision of the PDP Primary Election Committee led by Senator Ibrahim Dankwabo, who commended party members for the peaceful exercise.

Following Oluyede’s victory, the PDP said it was ready to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. In a statement released in Ado Ekiti, PDP South-West Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, described the primary as a reflection of the party’s unity and internal democracy. He said the emergence of Oluyede was a signal that the PDP was prepared to reclaim Ekiti from what he called years of misrule.

The PDP also stated that the exercise, held at the VINO Event Centre in Ado Ekiti, was transparent and widely attended by party members. The opposition party expressed confidence that the people of Ekiti were ready for change and would vote massively for the PDP in 2026.

In response, the APC dismissed the PDP’s confidence as empty boasting. The party’s spokesperson, Segun Dipe, said Oluyede’s repeated contests on different party platforms showed desperation, insisting that he would lose again in 2026.

The APC had earlier affirmed Governor Biodun Oyebanji as its candidate for the 2026 poll through a consensus process supervised by Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, who declared the exercise compliant with party rules and electoral guidelines.
