The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has reopened the upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan to accommodate visitors attending the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, scheduled for Friday.

The first test landing took place on Wednesday when an aircraft, part of the presidential fleet, touched down at 9:14 a.m. The arrival confirmed the airport’s readiness to host high-profile flights after being out of use since March 2025.

The upgrade of the airport began in September 2024 when Governor Seyi Makinde launched the expansion project, promising that it would boost the state’s economy and strengthen its link to the global market.
So far, the facility has seen improvements including a modern VIP lounge, a new fire truck, and a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing system. The reopening for the coronation marks the first operational use of the upgraded airport and sets the stage for more flights in the near future.
