Power Cut At Aminu Kano Hospital Linked To Three Deaths Amid ₦950m Debt Dispute

Three patients in the Intensive Care Unit of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital reportedly died after the Kano Electricity Distribution Company disconnected power supply over an outstanding debt of ₦949.88 million.

The hospital’s Chief Information Officer, Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, confirmed on Monday that the outage shut down life-support machines, leaving three out of four patients in the ICU dead. Staff also said newborns and other patients struggled as wards depended on generators that could not run continuously.

KEDCO denied responsibility, calling the hospital’s claim blackmail. Its spokesperson, Sani Bala Sani, said electricity had been restored before the hospital’s public complaint. He explained that the dispute stemmed from efforts to separate the hospital’s main facilities from staff residences, which he alleged had been consuming power without paying.

The company insisted that the hospital owed nearly ₦950 million in accumulated bills, plus an additional ₦108.95 million for August, and stressed that critical medical services were on a high-priority power line that delivers up to 22 hours of electricity daily.

Amid rising tension, the Kano State Police Command intervened on Monday. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori convened a peace meeting between the hospital’s management and KEDCO officials. Following the talks, KEDCO’s CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, ordered immediate reconnection of electricity to the hospital.
