Jonathan Warned Against 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against contesting the 2027 presidential election, warning that such a move would weaken the opposition and clear the path for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

Sani argued that if Jonathan joins the race under the PDP, while Atiku Abubakar contests on the platform of the ADC and Peter Obi runs again under the Labour Party, the opposition would split into three camps. According to him, this division would make it easier for Tinubu to secure victory just as he did in 2023.

He described Jonathan’s potential candidacy as a political misstep, likening it to a venture that would fail before it even begins. Sani added that Jonathan should understand the risks, given his experience and long years in public life.

Speaking on zoning, Sani backed the position of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who recently urged northerners to wait until 2031 before contesting the presidency. He said the current political mood favors the South completing its tenure and that most voters would not support a northern candidate in 2027.

On expectations from the Tinubu administration, Sani said northern leaders believe the region played a decisive role in his 2023 victory and are seeking a fairer share of appointments, projects, and contracts. He noted that recent engagements between northern leaders and political appointees had eased tensions by clarifying issues around resource distribution.

Addressing insecurity, Sani questioned whether declaring a state of emergency in the North would solve the problem, stressing that the creation of state police may not provide a lasting solution either.

He also dismissed claims that corruption has ended in Nigeria, citing recent reports from the EFCC and Transparency International that suggest otherwise. According to him, the fight against graft is still ongoing and requires stronger accountability.

On the economy, Sani noted that while Tinubu insists Nigeria has stopped borrowing, the government continues to rely on treasury bills and bonds. He said borrowing is not the real problem but ensuring funds are properly used for development.

He also praised ongoing tax reforms but faulted the exemption of low-income earners, arguing that even minimal taxation helps foster civic responsibility and accountability in governance.

Sani maintained that unless the opposition unites under one platform and presents a clear alternative, Tinubu remains in a strong position to secure a second term in 2027.
