Obi, who disclosed the visit on his X handle, described Jonathan as his elder brother and statesman, noting that their meeting focused on national issues. He wrote, “Today in Abuja, I met with my very dear elder brother, statesman, and leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan. We had a fruitful closed-door meeting and discussed the state of our dear nation.”

Although both men kept details private, the meeting comes amid growing conversations about Nigeria’s political direction under President Bola Tinubu and speculation of possible coalitions ahead of 2027.

Jonathan, who governed Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, has in recent years been active in peace mediation and democratic strengthening efforts across Africa. Obi, meanwhile, has sustained consultations with political leaders and stakeholders following his strong outing in 2023, where he came third behind Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

The Abuja parley is the latest in Obi’s series of high-level engagements. Political observers believe such moves may be early signs of a new coalition that could reshape the contest in 2027.

Talk of Jonathan’s possible return has grown since the PDP zoned its presidential ticket to the South. There have also been reports of efforts to lure Obi back to the PDP, with many within the party seeing him as a strong challenger to Tinubu.
