Akwa Ibom governor Umo Eno has defended the welfare package of his Personal Assistants, insisting that each of them earns at least ₦1 million monthly.

He dismissed public complaints about poor remuneration as a deliberate attempt to mislead the people.

The governor made the remarks on Friday during a constituency engagement in Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, where he addressed concerns raised over allowances paid to his aides. He maintained that ₦1 million cannot be described as a token, stressing that his administration takes the welfare of political appointees seriously.

Eno cited the example of Blessed Essien, a Personal Assistant on Protocol, who used part of his monthly pay to provide a borehole and water distribution system for his community. He said the project showed that aides are capable of using their earnings to improve the lives of people around them.
In line with his push for openness, the governor revealed plans to publish the complete list of political appointees and their local government origins in national newspapers. He urged residents to question their representatives, including aides and commissioners, on what they have delivered to the people.
As recognition for his initiative, Essien was elevated to the position of Special Assistant on Public Works, a move Eno described as an example of rewarding responsibility and service.
The governor’s stance comes as debates over political appointees’ allowances continue to generate reactions within and outside the state.
