Security operatives in Kano State arrested more than 100 suspected political thugs on Saturday during the by-election in the Bagwai/Shanono constituency.

The suspects were picked up while attempting to disrupt the voting process.

The election area witnessed heavy security presence with personnel from the Nigerian Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Road Safety Corps stationed across Bagwai and Shanono. Operatives also mounted barricades at key entry points, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

The Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Abdu Zango, confirmed the arrests while addressing journalists at the Independent National Electoral Commission office in Bagwai. He explained that the action was necessary to protect the integrity of the election and warned that more arrests could follow if others attempted to cause disturbances.
Zango assured that those apprehended would face prosecution. He praised security agencies for their swift response and said areas previously affected by disruptions had been brought under control, allowing voting to continue smoothly.
He added that while some polling units recorded late arrival of election materials and interruptions, most centres were able to commence voting between 8:30 and 9 a.m., keeping the exercise on track.
