A deadly crash on the Zaria–Kano Highway claimed 12 lives on Friday when a DAF trailer lost control in Samawa Village, Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps has linked the tragedy to negligence, warning that such incidents can be avoided if safety rules are obeyed.

The accident involved a trailer with registration number KMC 931 ZE, which was carrying both goods and passengers, a practice the FRSC has long opposed. Preliminary findings revealed that the cab hook of the vehicle broke, causing the cab to detach from the trailer and resulting in complete loss of control.

Out of 19 people onboard, 12 died instantly, five sustained injuries, while two survived without harm. The injured were rushed to Kura General Hospital for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Nasarawa Hospital mortuary.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the crash as an unnecessary loss of lives and urged transport operators to retire old, mechanically unsafe vehicles from use. He condemned the habit of mixing goods, animals, and passengers in the same vehicle, warning that stiffer penalties will be enforced against offenders.
He also stressed that mechanical failures remain one of the main causes of crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles in Nigeria. According to him, fleet renewal and proper vehicle maintenance are essential steps needed to curb such tragedies on the highways.
The latest crash has once again raised concerns about safety practices in the haulage sector, as families mourn victims of yet another preventable accident.
