The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties to stop engaging in premature campaigns for the 2027 general elections, saying such actions violate the Electoral Act.

In a statement released in Abuja by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the commission said it has not yet issued a timetable for the next general elections and that no party primaries or candidate nominations have taken place.

INEC stated that under Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, public campaigning is only permitted 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours before the election. It further cited Section 95(1), which mandates that campaign activities must follow guidelines set by the commission.

The warning comes amid a surge in political posters and subtle campaigning in parts of the country. INEC said while citizens have the right to discuss politics and express opinions about future elections, direct campaigning or vote solicitation at this stage is not allowed.
The commission reminded political parties of this issue during its last quarterly consultative meeting and stressed the need for full compliance with the law.
