Four senators from Osun and Akwa Ibom states have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), continuing a wave of defections shaking Nigeria’s opposition ranks.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read their defection letters on the Senate floor during plenary on Wednesday. The senators are Sampson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South), Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North-East), Olubiyi Oluwole Fadeyi (Osun Central), and Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi (Osun East).

Senator Fadeyi had earlier resigned from the PDP on June 12, citing internal crises, factional disputes, and what he called the party’s failure to provide credible national leadership. His resignation followed that of Senator Fadahunsi, who also left the party shortly before.

Fadeyi’s resignation letter to his PDP Ward Chairman in Oke-Ejigbo, Ila-Orangun, stated that his decision came after wide consultations with political allies, family, and advisers.

In the House of Representatives, three lawmakers also quit the PDP for the APC during Wednesday’s plenary. They include Taofeek Ajilesoro (Ife federal constituency), Omirin Olusanya (Ilesha and Atakunmosa constituencies), and Marcus Onobun (Esan federal constituency in Edo State). Their letters were read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The wave of defections comes just a day after the Osun State PDP leadership caucus endorsed Governor Ademola Adeleke for a second term and also declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Governor Adeleke made the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter), following a closed-door meeting with PDP leaders in Osogbo. While reaffirming his loyalty to the PDP, he welcomed the party’s endorsement and pledged to continue serving Osun State under its platform.
“I remain in the PDP, the party that gave me the platform to serve the good people of Osun,” Adeleke said. “I have been unanimously endorsed by the Osun PDP for a second term in 2026.”
Despite Adeleke’s strong position in the state, the recent defections raise questions about internal unity within the PDP, particularly in the Southwest and South-South, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
